My Life Verse

God causes all things to work together for good, for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose...

Throughout my life, in all its ups and downs, this has been the one constant truth I can confess.

It may indeed be fair to say that material possessions can lead to a desirable emotional state. I think the larger fix is not looking for *other* things to inspire desirable emotional states, but to stop treating those emotional states like they are the purpose of our existence.

That it can lead to a "desirable" emotional state is not contested. The same can be stated about cocaine and heroin. The fact that such a state is "desirable" is the key. On what factors is its "desirability" gauged? A pleasant but temporary sense of well-being, in and of itself, is neither commendable or otherwise. The whole idea is that some "memes" grow in their power to influence people by building on that desire to "feel good."

I do not claim that all pleasure is "bad" - the Puritans had large families, hearty appetites and loved their beer - but they saw that those pleasures were only to be promoted and indulged within a Kingdom framework.

Thanks
